PitaPot & doner kebab
Doner kebab servings in Germany
The use of pita products is widely spread all over Europe in both foodservice and retail sector. One of the most interesting markets in the foodservice sector is the Turkish doner kebab market in Germany.
According to the German doner kebab industry association, the nation of 82 million people consumes two million kebabs a day, through 16.000 street outlets. Kebab is Germany’s favourite fast food option overruling the sausage option. It is a fast-growing industry which makes significant exports to other European countries, mainly in France and Poland.
In France (and all over Europe) the doner kebab market is also growing. Kebabs are third to only hamburgers and pizza in the fast-food diet of the French. Approximately 300 million kebabs are eaten per year in more than 10,000 outlets.
Doner kebab outlets use different types of pita, mainly:
1) a flat round bread, cut in four equal sizes and use one quadrant for one serving
and 2) classic pita / pocket bread. However, all kinds of buns have the same problems. They are difficult to haddle / to eat because toppings are falling off and sauces running down.
Pitapot is an EU trademark. There is an opportunity for a manufacturer/distributor to build a generic name for a bun specially designed for doner kebab and exploit the big European market.
